f you were asked to describe your year in a single word, or a short sentence, what would you say? With Christmas fast approaching 2014 is almost history. I find the end of a year is always a good time to reflect so that you can leave any low-lights behind, celebrate the highlights, and move into the New Year with purpose. This issue of Metropol is full of positive articles that we wouldn’t have seen reported this time last year. The city really has changed an amazing amount in the past year and Cantabrians have worked incredibly hard to rebuild their homes, lives, businesses and buildings. Some of the highlights for me in this issue are the Arts Centre coming along with the turret now restored, the Isaac Theatre Royal complete and magnificent, news of expansion at The Colombo – that trendy European inspired shopping centre, The Tannery with its expansion and grand Victorian style, the huge number of shops, boutiques, cafes and bars that have opened or reopened, and the fabulous new buildings that are being built with passion and true vision. It’s wonderful to feel like we live in an (almost) normal city again – where we can go out for a drink or bite to eat in a fabulously fitted out restaurant and not feel like it’s a temporary stop-gap. Where we can shop again in luxury places like Quinns and Dodds, be impressed by the tenacity and verve of the smaller fashion boutiques and be pampered in beautiful salons. So as we conclude another big year in Christchurch I think we should all pat ourselves on the back for staying, for being positive, tolerant, patient, for rebuilding this city and creating a strong new ethos, and for collectively bolstering the unique and inspirational spirit of our city that may have flickered but has never waned.

avid Ladderman and Lizzie Tollemache are actors, circus artists and variety entertainers who are clearly multi-talented in the world of performance art. Bring them together in their Mr and Mrs Alexander performance and their chemistry is breathtaking. Between them the two, who produce their original work from their home in Lyttelton, have performed at over 50 festivals across nine countries, and their company ‘Rollicking Entertainment’ is the current holder of the Iron Chicken – the World Buskers Festival’s prestigious critics’ choice award. Their physical skills include juggling, ladderwalking, psychic illusion, escapology and sideshow stunts. Cantabrians will be able to catch Mr and Mrs Alexander during the 2015 SCRIT World Buskers Festival, 15-25 January. www.worldbuskersfestival.com.

How old were you when you discovered your love of acting and stunts? Lizzie: Hmm, I’ve never NOT wanted to act but for the stunts bit… I remember being 9, getting my sister to tie me up with rope and time how long it took for me to escape. David: At 10 years old my mum took me to the Moscow Circus and when I saw a dozen clowns come tumbling out of one tiny car, I thought it was the coolest thing I’d ever seen. Did you ever dream then, of making performing arts a career choice? Lizzie: Yup. Mum was an actress and Dad was a stand-up comedian so it was the natural choice. David: At the time, no. Then much later, a careers officer assessed me at high school and decided I’d only ever be good at two things - drama or psychology. In a way these days I use both.

Dave & Lizzie How dangerous are some of your acts and how do you feel during an extreme performance? Lizzie: Replicating anything you see on stage would be a terrible idea. In this show I hammer nails into my face and stop my pulse, David gets intense with a whip and there is a bone crushing animal trap. Other times we’ve eaten fire, jumped off roofs, walked on glass… If one of the dangerous acts went wrong, you’d be looking at a trip to the hospital. Even after countless shows in various countries, we still get nervous before each show and double check everything. Three times. David: While putting Lizzie into a trance in a show in Ottawa this year, we hypnotised an audience member by accident - she was fine but it was a good reminder that we are playing with some really powerful stuff and you have to be careful (knowing what to do, we brought her back into the room quickly and the crowd thought it was part of the show). In fact we got a standing ovation that night. But you've got to be prepared. Why did you decide to focus on comedic performances? Lizzie: Daddy issues, probably. David: Early in my career I got a lot of work with outdoor Shakespeare companies in Australia, and during the day we used to do comic, old time medicine shows for the families. You quickly learn that Donald O’Connor was right: “You can study Shakespeare and be quite elite. You can charm the critics but have nothing to eat. Just slip on a banana peel, the world’s at your feet- make 'em laugh make 'em laugh make 'em laugh!”

You are both involved in theatre, busking and dare devil feats - what is your favourite genre of performing arts? Lizzie: Whatever we’re working on! The great thing about our job is the that it is always changing - you can be a naughty French maid one night, MC a comedy show the next, and be rehearsing for a mainstage show at The Court Theatre during the day. Travelling for festivals is a massive perk and has taken us to some incredible places - a research trip this year took us to Vegas and New Orleans, and we got engaged on a day off in Barcelona.

David: A multi-genre show like Mr and Mrs Alexander is different every single night, which keeps you on your toes - you never know what you’re going to get. That’s my favourite. Any given night while performing the show and saying our lines, as well as what you see, we are also silently juggling the predicted behaviour of at least three audience members, trying to influence the behaviour of four more, sending information to each other and setting up illusions. Because it is such a live wire, and so dependent on each audience, it is an incredibly rewarding and exciting project. What other creative endeavours do you enjoy? Lizzie: I play basic guitar, write songs in my spare time and am involved in various slam poetry events. We’re constantly up-skilling: developing more circus and sideshow acts, researching and writing for the next production. David: Any spare moment I like to pretend I’m still 17, grab my board and go for a skate. On a more personal note what music are you enjoying at present? Lizzie: A lot of Sia and A Tribe Called Quest. You can never go wrong with The Front Lawn (or basically anything with Don McGlashin in it), and we’re spoilt for choice with live gigs in Lyttelton - Delaney Davidson, The Eastern, Runaround Sue, Devilish Mary and the Holy Rollers, Unfaithful Ways, Lindon Puffin…. David: Yesterday we had a massive dance around our living room to Janellle Monae.

WHILE PERFORMING THE SHOW, AS WELL AS WHAT YOU SEE, WE ARE ALSO SILENTLY JUGGLING THE PREDICTED BEHAVIOUR OF AT LEAST THREE AUDIENCE MEMBERS, TRYING TO INFLUENCE THE BEHAVIOUR OF FOUR MORE, SENDING INFORMATION TO EACH OTHER AND SETTING UP ILLUSIONS. What are you like at parties? Lizzie: I usually manage to keep my pants on. David: You’ll always find me in the kitchen. What’s next on the wish list? Lizzie: We’re putting together a UK tour so wishing for massive crowds, standing ovations and to not come home bankrupt. David: Sunny skies on our wedding day. Lizzie: Oh yeah, that too!

If you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be? Lizzie: “Take a deep breath. Will it really matter in 10 years’ time?” David: The same thing I tell myself today! “Stick to your guns, you can actually do it mate. But for crying out loud stop comparing yourself to other people.” What is your proudest achievement? Lizzie: David saying yes when I asked him to marry me. David: Lizzie liking me enough to ask me to marry her. Which is your favourite café, bar or restaurant in Canterbury? Lizzie: The Bodhi Tree is hands down best food in town. David: I have a soft spot for the darkroom on St Asaph Street because of everything they’ve done to keep variety entertainment alive over the last few years. Also they have great beer. What would you like to see in the ‘new’ Christchurch? Lizzie: Lots of green spaces. More community gardens. There can never be too many! David: An established, council sanctioned busking pitch in the heart of town. Having just returned from New Orleans it’s clear to see that recovery is about people (locals and tourists) enjoying life in the heart of a place. Not just bricks and mortar. What is one thing that Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? Lizzie: I love wild meat (wild venison, wild pork, rabbit…) partly because it’s delicious and partly because dealing with introduced pests by eating them is both environmentally and ethically awesome. BUT I’ve never shot my own food, so that’s my goal by this time next year: slowly morph into the New Zealand version of Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall… David: I am both excited and terrified about Episode VII. Restoration a labour The conservation and restoration of the Isaac Theatre Royal’s gigantic dome is certainly the crowning glory of the recently completed $40 million reconstruction and makeover of the entire building.

nd for art conservator Carolina Izzo, who was in charge of the domerestoration team, the most important aspect of the project was its positive connection to the people of Christchurch. Even now, a few weeks after the reopening of the theatre, Carolina and her team are still experiencing a strong reaction from the community as people learn what was achieved. Carolina says it has reconfirmed her belief in the power of heritage conservation to connect people, especially those who have shared a traumatic experience like the Christchurch earthquakes. To her, restoration is more than just a matter of putting material things back together. “It’s an acknowledgement of people’s cultural identity” she says. Awareness of this admirable project is now also spreading overseas. In November, Carolina gave a speech about it at the International Art Conservation Conference in Florence, Italy.

CAROLINA SAYS IT HAS RECONFIRMED HER BELIEF IN THE POWER OF HERITAGE CONSERVATION TO CONNECT PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO HAVE SHARED A TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE LIKE THE CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKES. The number of people working on the 16month dome project varied from nine to 12 and included two conservation colleagues from overseas. The team made sure there were also local people involved, like the contemporary artist Julia Holden, who could not resist being involved in the restoration of this piece of Christchurch’s artistic heritage. Carolina is an internationally renowned, Wellington-based conservator who trained in Florence, with more than 16 years’ experience working on earthquake-damaged objects. Carolina moved to New Zealand in 2001 and worked for six years as a painting conservator at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa before setting up her own conservation business.

Having worked on the Teatro de San Carlo in Naples, which opened in 1767 and is the oldest continuously open opera venue in Europe, she was delighted to be asked to work on Christchurch’s Isaac Theatre Royal by Naylor Love, the principal contractor for its restoration. Carolina was joined by fellow Italian Emanuele Vitulli, with his experience in conserving quake-damaged objects and buildings, who stayed with the team for the first two months. Other enthusiastic co-workers were Stefano Pessina, who did the quantity surveys and Lucia Dori, who helped with the painting conservation.

of love The painting within the dome that needed restoration is made up of eight overlapping canvases featuring dream-like scenes from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, including characters like the mischievous elf Puck; Titania, Queen of the Fairies; and Bottom, whose head has been changed into that of a donkey. The damaged dome was first removed from the theatre’s ceiling in 2012. It was then wrapped in Tyvek high-density polyethylene to protect it from further damage and re-suspended inside the theatre’s Green Room for its restoration. The overlapping painted canvases were then removed from the dome, revealing a lot of damage to the underlying plaster. The team’s challenge was to repair and restore the original shape of the plaster and then cover it with eight pieces of carbon fibre the same shape as the canvasses, which were then to be attached to these. However, mould was also found underneath the polyethylene that had been wrapped around the canvasses for protection. The mould was laboriously removed from the front and back of the canvasses. Eventually, the paintings were also meticulously restored. Other work undertaken by the conservation team at the theatre included restoration of the marble stairway, which has been at the theatre since 1928; and the gilding on the walls, columns and ceiling of the auditorium. We conducted the last part of our interview sitting within the theatre, looking up at the magnificent dome. Carolina then asked to be left alone, so that she could quietly scrutinise every detail of the enormous task she and her team had only recently completed there.

At the Colombo Street entrance, the Annah Stretton fashion shop has just expanded, while the Underground Coffee Co has been purchased by Allpress Espresso. There are also the continuously changing pop-ups, which recently included the Lava Gallery, Mrs. Smith Loves and The Foxes Den. There certainly is always something going on at The Colombo!

Messing about in boats… There can be little more idyllic a setting for a long and leisurely lunch, than on the deck at the Antigua Boat Sheds overlooking the Avon River as it murmurs and meanders its way towards the Montreal Street Bridge. Eating delicious food, sipping a glass of wine or a cold ale, laughing at the ducks paddling against the current, and watching people “messing about in boats” is about as good as it gets on a summer's day in Christchurch.

he Antigua Boat Sheds have been part of Christchurch's history for over 130 years and are classified as a Category 1 Historic Building. They were erected in 1882 by two Lyttelton boat builders - Messrs Albert Shaw and J.T. Tidd - for the express purpose of providing recreational facilities for the citizens of Christchurch. The facilities charmingly included a ladies' waiting room and a gentlemen's dressing room! Fast forward 130 years and the sheds survived the Christchurch earthquakes extraordinarily well thanks to strengthening and re-piling work that had been carried out in 2006. Consequently the sheds were closed for only six weeks and were one of the first businesses to be up and running again in the CBD. The Boat Sheds are still home to that traditional and iconic pastime – boating – that retains all the trappings of Edwardian England. They are also home to an excellent cafe and catering service. Indeed the Boat Sheds offer a complete experi ence for visitors. Mike and Sally Jones, and until just a few years ago Sally's family, have owned and operated the Boat Sheds for decades. Back in the 1980s today's fully-functioning cafe was known as the Antigua Milk Bar. But as we know times have changed and tastes have become more

sophisticated. So Mike and Sally extended and developed the cafe into the relaxed and inviting venue it now is where guests can enjoy a delicious breakfast, brunch or lunch. So enjoy an Avon River adventure in a single or double kayak, a Canadian canoe or a row boat or paddle boat, perhaps pulling up at the river bank for a picnic. There are also bikes for hire so you can embark on an urban adventure discovering the city itself or exploring nearby Hagley Park, taking along a boxed lunch from the cafe. fter three years of hands-on training, the third year CPIT Fashion Technology and Design students were out to impress the fashion industry with their PITCH collections. And impress they did. The industry judges this year were Denise Le'Strange-Corbet from World and Megan McKee from Contemporary Lounge Ballantynes and their choice on the night was Natalie Weaver's collection Tough. Denise Le'Strange-Corbet was taken with the “exquisite tailoring, flawless construction and beautiful fabrics” in Natalie's collection. Tough was inspired by Natalie's mother and featured a neutral palette and echoes of pyjamas and dressing gowns, taken to sophisticated new levels with the soft fabrics folded, layered and draped in unexpected ways. Ethel Chang was highly commended with a very bold and highly technical collection of oversized dresses and suits that were reminiscent of clowns and dress ups, an effect accentuated by the models' white lips and eye shadow. As their training is largely practical, the students must conceptualise, design and construct their ensembles from start to finish and then organise models and choreograph the runaway show. Some go as far as creating their own prints as well.

Recreated in the spirit of A passion for the history of Christchurch was the incentive to bring new life to an old industrial site. “It was a really intact 100 year old building,” says Alasdair Cassels, founder of The Tannery. “The building really did tell the history of Christchurch.”

lasdair has learnt much more about the history of the area since he purchased the old tannery site 20 years ago. Built in 1841 it was one of the primary industry sites set up along the Heathcote River – a river which allowed access to the newly formed city of Christchurch. The importance of the long neglected Heathcote River plays an integral part of The Tannery's future plans. “It needs its mana back,” says Alasdair, who has been talking with local runanga to bring new life back to the river. Work to clean the river has been underway since 2011, when The Tannery began their six monthly rubbish removals. It has become something of a community event, with staff and locals rem oving huge amounts of rubbish including heaters, car bodies, TVs and couches from the river, with support from Christchurch City Council. $400,000 has been earmarked for upgrading the river over the coming years, including building a bridge, a wharf and an art trail along the Towpath walk way. With a Victorian look on one side and Maori carvings on the other, he sees it as a metaphorical bridge, which is both a work of art and a connection for the city and the people. An unused building at the rear of The Tannery site is to be used as a carving and welding workshop, with the intention that it will continue

as a home for traditional carving. The Tannery itself is also evolving, with two picture theatres to become part of the emporium next year. There are now 70 businesses on site, in The Atrium with its soaring Victorian ceiling, and along The Boardwalk. These consist of 56 retail stores providing everything from homeware and fabrics to owers and good books, as well as17 fashion stores. Most of the stores are owner operated, meaning that those who have chosen to be part of The Tannery bring with them a passi on for their own products as well as the site itself. “We've created a unique boutique environment,” says Alasdair, with many of the tenants those who were misplaced

from the High Street area of the city, as well as new businesses. These include fashion store Alchemy Equipment, a new arrival in July this year, with co-founder Campbell Junor saying The Tannery provided the ideal home for their business with its need for a multi-use site. Like DEVal, who manufacture their garments on site at The Tannery, they provide a connectivity between the customer and the product, with both fashion lines designed on site. Campbell sees The Tannery as containing a carefully curated collection of stores, with the story of what Alasdair has created felt as soon as people walk into The Atrium. “Customers come here specically for our ethos,” says Alasdair.

It is imperative that all teachers, administrators and certain community agencies must be involved in working towards this goal. Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression. Emerging literature suggests that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic, Professor Metzler says.

For their win, in addition to the kudos of running the country’s best café, Sue and Steve drive home a sporty Renault Clio R.S. 200 worth more than $30,000. Their winning dish was a Spring Stack comprising sautéed fresh local asparagus, chorizo and fresh spinach served with roasted tomato, poached free-range eggs and vibrant avocado crème on Ironic’s freshly baked ciabatta.

How to make a Pisco Sour The national cocktail of Chile and Peru, this drink may have evolved from the Pisco Punch, which was all the rage in San Francisco during the 1849 gold rush. Pisco is a clear brandy distilled from grapes in the wine-producing regions of Peru and Chile. If you can’t lay your hands on a bottle, cognac is a good substitute, but it will change the colour.

Glassware Usually served in a martini glass, several types are available. Personally we prefer using Luigi Bormioli Bach Martini glasses available from Total Food Equipment, which are an elegant fluted glass.

Recipe 60ml pisco or cognac 40ml fresh lime juice 40ml Simple Syrup 1 large egg white Ice 4 drops of Angostura bitters

Pisco Sour

Put all of the ingredients except the ice and bitters in a cocktail shaker; shake for 10 seconds. Add ice; shake for 10 more seconds, then strain into a chilled coupe. Dot the drink with the bitters and draw a straw through the drops. Edgy nightclub & gastro pub 'Raising the roof' is a popular expression used to signify a party that's off the charts. And, although the city's new Cook Brothers' bar can't raise the roof, it's not for lack of the 'cool factor'.

hristchurch's first rooftop bar has hit the nightlife in a very big way since the long-awaited Engineers and Merchants opened on St Asaph St next to Baretta in November. But what puts the hot in this hot spot is its 'best of both worlds' atmosphere. Owned by Cook Brothers Bars from Dunedin, Merchants – an edgy nightclub with dancing and music – is downstairs, while Engineers – a gastro pub style restaurant and rooftop bar – is upstairs. And, while upstairs is all about good food and atmosphere, downstairs caters to the late-night dancing crowd, open 11.30am until late at 178 St Asaph St. Cook Brothers' Bars cut its teeth on the iconic Dunedin student pub the Captain Cook Tavern before expanding into other hospitality ventures in Dunedin, Auckland and Queenstown. The company's Christchurch venture was named after the building itself, originally occupied from the 1920s by the company Engineers and Merchants. “We have always had Christchurch on the radar and the premises, leased prior to the earthquake by the Fu Hua Chinese restaurant, appealed to us because of the opportunity to create a roof top bar and fill a gap in the bar and the night life scene in the downtown area,” Cook Brothers' Bars CEO James Arnott explains. “It is a great building with a fantastic feel to it and its original use has inspired the name Engineers while the smaller downstairs bar will retain the Merchants name.” Engineers incorporates a range of dining zones both inside and on the roof top featuring a varied menu and bar snacks. “We are planning live entertainment on the roof top bar and inside late at night DJ's will set up and the space will transform into a dance floor,” James says. “Our focus is on providing a fun venue which is in line with our other outlets throughout the country.” When it comes to nightlife, Cook Brothers' Bars has been around the block, after launching in 2004, when Arnott and partner Richard

Scottish Shortbread Sundae with blueberry ice cream Serves 4-6 Ingredients Blueberry Ice Cream 3C Blueberries (fresh or frozen and thawed) 1C white sugar 1/2C water (you might need more, but start with this) 2 tsp lemon juice 2C half ‘n’ half, or half amount of cream and half of milk 3 Tbsp vanilla paste Scottish Shortbread 1C unsalted butter 3/4C powdered / icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla paste 2½ C plain flour Hefty pinch of sea salt Crème Chantilly ½ C whipping cream 1 Tbsp maple syrup 1 Tbsp wildflower honey ½ a vanilla pod Crème Fraîche Sauce 1 C crème fraîche 1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped out; save pod for another use 3 Tbsp white sugar To Serve 4-6 cherries 1 Tbsp chiffonade or lemon verbena leaves or edible flower petals

Method Blueberry ice cream Put the blueberries, sugar and water in saucepan. Simmer for about 5 minutes while keeping an eye on the water. Don’t let it get too dry and burn, but don’t leave too much water either. Add lemon juice and puree in a blender until smooth. Chill in the fridge overnight. Stir in half ‘n’ half and vanilla paste. Freeze in an icecream maker until it looks like soft-serve, then scoop out and put in the freezer until set and frozen. Scottish shortbread Preheat oven to 190C Cream butter, sugar and vanilla paste. Beat until smooth. Sift dry ingredients together, then GENTLY fold into the butter until the mixture is homogeneous. Press dough evenly into a 20x30cm square pan. Mark into smaller squares by pushing the tines of a fork about ¾ of the way through the dough. Bake in preheated oven 23-28 minutes. Cut along markings while still hot but let it cool in the pan. Turn out and store in an airtight container. Crème Chantilly Heat the cream with syrup, honey and vanilla seeds until hot. DO NOT BOIL. Chill in the fridge 3 hours or up to overnight. Whip to soft peaks when you are ready to serve. Crème fraîche sauce Combine all ingredients in a bowl, whisk together until smooth. Let sit for at least an hour, chilled, before serving. Give a quick whisk right before serving. To serve Pool the crème fraîche sauce on the plate and place one square of shortbread on top. Scoop a small sphere of blueberry ice cream and place on the shortbread. Spoon a dollop of crème Chantilly and put the cherry on top. Lightly scatter the lemon verbena or flower petals.

Dinner is served from 5pm till late as Indians like to dine later, making it the perfect location for people who prefer late or après theatre dining. The extensive menu is identical to the one that has made Coriander's one of Canterbury's favourite Indian restaurants, with new dishes coming in the New Year. All dishes are prepared by five Indian chefs in the new state-of-the-art kitchen, with two tandoors, viewable through a huge glass window. While during the day and early evening background music is Indian, evening patrons can enjoy an eclectic variety of live late night entertainment and dancing. A salsa dance group was first to perform, and a DJ is available on request. Coriander's also caters for private functions in the atmospheric Bollywood room. Groups can have their own choice of music and can dance from 10pm to 1am. A DJ is available on request. Takeaways can be collected from a discrete entrance at Welles Street, where there is also evening parking for 12 cars. The completed building with restaurant and bar is quite stunning and the Design Team have done a great job.

A two burner barbeque will easily cater for up to four people while a six burner will allow cooking for much larger groups. Match the barbeque size to the area. Compact porta ble barbeques suit small courtyards or apartments while larger outdoor kitchens are best for big decks and patios. Consider the fuel source of the barbeque. Gas is ideal for beginners as it is easy to turn on and there are no messy ashes to clean up. For an authentic barbeque taste and experience, choose a charcoal fuelled barbeque. To experience the best of both worlds use a charcoal gas grill which uses gas to light the charcoal, providing a traditional smoky flavour without t he hassle of lighting coals. Examples of their work - ask them if you can talk to someone who has used them to build or renovate, and look at examples of their work. Qualications – nd out if they are qualied. Licensing – check the Register of licensed practitioners to see if they are licensed. A licensed practitioner has shown they have the skills, knowledge and experience to meet governmentbacked national standards. Membership of trade organisations – nd out if they are members of New Zealand Certied Builders Association (CBANZ) or Registered Master Builders Federation (RMBF). Guarantees – whether any are offered and what is covered.

Christmas decorating ideas Decorating your home for Christmas doesn’t need to be stressful or expensive. Get your family involved and have fun making your home beautiful for the holiday season.

Display your favourite Christmas collections. If you don't have a collection, now is a great time to start!

Decorate your house plants by hanging small Christmas ornaments on them. Place a collection of Christmas books on your coffee table. Fill a glass bowl with pine cones and Christmas balls and place on a shelf or table. Wrap your staircase banister with indoor Christmas lights, garland, and bows. To add scent throughout your home, tie 5 or 6 cinnamon sticks together in a bundle using Christmas ribbon. Make as many bundles as you wish and place around your home in baskets or bowls.

Make simple bows out of Christmas ribbons and attach them to your curtains with pins.

To decorate your table, tie Christmas ribbon to the stems of glasses and/or handles of cutlery. To dress up your chairs, tie Christmas bows around the chair so that the bow is on the back of the chair. Using a small brush or q-tip, paint the edges of pine cones with glittery gold craft paint. After the pine cones dry, place them in a decorative basket. Add Christmas garland to door frames, window frames and mirrors. You can use tape to secure the garland to the surfaces.

Tie bows around door knobs using festive and colourful Christmas ribbon. Attach garland and Christmas bows to your chandelier. You can also weave strings of red beads in the garland that will dangle down from your chandelier and reflect the light, which will add sparkle. Buy poinsettia plants for your home – they’re traditional Christmas flowering plants that will last throughout the season. Don't forget to decorate your fireplace mantel and bring out your Christmas stockings.
