I

f you were asked to describe your year in a single word, or a short sentence, what would you say? With Christmas fast approaching 2014 is almost history. I find the end of a year is always a good time to reflect so that you can leave any low-lights behind, celebrate the highlights, and move into the New Year with purpose. This issue of Metropol is full of positive articles that we wouldn’t have seen reported this time last year. The city really has changed an amazing amount in the past year and Cantabrians have worked incredibly hard to rebuild their homes, lives, businesses and buildings. Some of the highlights for me in this issue are the Arts Centre coming along with the turret now restored, the Isaac Theatre Royal complete and magnificent, news of expansion at The Colombo – that trendy European inspired shopping centre, The Tannery with its expansion and grand Victorian style, the huge number of shops, boutiques, cafes and bars that have opened or reopened, and the fabulous new buildings that are being built with passion and true vision. It’s wonderful to feel like we live in an (almost) normal city again – where we can go out for a drink or bite to eat in a fabulously fitted out restaurant and not feel like it’s a temporary stop-gap. Where we can shop again in luxury places like Quinns and Dodds, be impressed by the tenacity and verve of the smaller fashion boutiques and be pampered in beautiful salons. So as we conclude another big year in Christchurch I think we should all pat ourselves on the back for staying, for being positive, tolerant, patient, for rebuilding this city and creating a strong new ethos, and for collectively bolstering the unique and inspirational spirit of our city that may have flickered but has never waned.

The team at Metropol wish you all a very happy Christmas and care-free, fun-filled holidays – you certainly deserve it!

FIVE MINUTES by Angela Bennett

five minutes D

avid Ladderman and Lizzie Tollemache are actors, circus artists and variety entertainers who are clearly multi-talented in the world of performance art. Bring them together in their Mr and Mrs Alexander performance and their chemistry is breathtaking. Between them the two, who produce their original work from their home in Lyttelton, have performed at over 50 festivals across nine countries, and their company ‘Rollicking Entertainment’ is the current holder of the Iron Chicken – the World Buskers Festival’s prestigious critics’ choice award. Their physical skills include juggling, ladderwalking, psychic illusion, escapology and sideshow stunts. Cantabrians will be able to catch Mr and Mrs Alexander during the 2015 SCRIT World Buskers Festival, 15-25 January. www.worldbuskersfestival.com.

How old were you when you discovered your love of acting and stunts? Lizzie: Hmm, I’ve never NOT wanted to act but for the stunts bit… I remember being 9, getting my sister to tie me up with rope and time how long it took for me to escape. David: At 10 years old my mum took me to the Moscow Circus and when I saw a dozen clowns come tumbling out of one tiny car, I thought it was the coolest thing I’d ever seen. Did you ever dream then, of making performing arts a career choice? Lizzie: Yup. Mum was an actress and Dad was a stand-up comedian so it was the natural choice. David: At the time, no. Then much later, a careers officer assessed me at high school and decided I’d only ever be good at two things - drama or psychology. In a way these days I use both.

with

Dave & Lizzie How dangerous are some of your acts and how do you feel during an extreme performance? Lizzie: Replicating anything you see on stage would be a terrible idea. In this show I hammer nails into my face and stop my pulse, David gets intense with a whip and there is a bone crushing animal trap. Other times we’ve eaten fire, jumped off roofs, walked on glass… If one of the dangerous acts went wrong, you’d be looking at a trip to the hospital. Even after countless shows in various countries, we still get nervous before each show and double check everything. Three times. David: While putting Lizzie into a trance in a show in Ottawa this year, we hypnotised an audience member by accident - she was fine but it was a good reminder that we are playing with some really powerful stuff and you have to be careful (knowing what to do, we brought her back into the room quickly and the crowd thought it was part of the show). In fact we got a standing ovation that night. But you've got to be prepared. Why did you decide to focus on comedic performances? Lizzie: Daddy issues, probably. David: Early in my career I got a lot of work with outdoor Shakespeare companies in Australia, and during the day we used to do comic, old time medicine shows for the families. You quickly learn that Donald O’Connor was right: “You can study Shakespeare and be quite elite. You can charm the critics but have nothing to eat. Just slip on a banana peel, the world’s at your feet- make 'em laugh make 'em laugh make 'em laugh!”

You are both involved in theatre, busking and dare devil feats - what is your favourite genre of performing arts? Lizzie: Whatever we’re working on! The great thing about our job is the that it is always changing - you can be a naughty French maid one night, MC a comedy show the next, and be rehearsing for a mainstage show at The Court Theatre during the day. Travelling for festivals is a massive perk and has taken us to some incredible places - a research trip this year took us to Vegas and New Orleans, and we got engaged on a day off in Barcelona.

FIVE MINUTES

David: A multi-genre show like Mr and Mrs Alexander is different every single night, which keeps you on your toes - you never know what you’re going to get. That’s my favourite. Any given night while performing the show and saying our lines, as well as what you see, we are also silently juggling the predicted behaviour of at least three audience members, trying to influence the behaviour of four more, sending information to each other and setting up illusions. Because it is such a live wire, and so dependent on each audience, it is an incredibly rewarding and exciting project. What other creative endeavours do you enjoy? Lizzie: I play basic guitar, write songs in my spare time and am involved in various slam poetry events. We’re constantly up-skilling: developing more circus and sideshow acts, researching and writing for the next production. David: Any spare moment I like to pretend I’m still 17, grab my board and go for a skate. On a more personal note what music are you enjoying at present? Lizzie: A lot of Sia and A Tribe Called Quest. You can never go wrong with The Front Lawn (or basically anything with Don McGlashin in it), and we’re spoilt for choice with live gigs in Lyttelton - Delaney Davidson, The Eastern, Runaround Sue, Devilish Mary and the Holy Rollers, Unfaithful Ways, Lindon Puffin…. David: Yesterday we had a massive dance around our living room to Janellle Monae.

WHILE PERFORMING THE SHOW, AS WELL AS WHAT YOU SEE, WE ARE ALSO SILENTLY JUGGLING THE PREDICTED BEHAVIOUR OF AT LEAST THREE AUDIENCE MEMBERS, TRYING TO INFLUENCE THE BEHAVIOUR OF FOUR MORE, SENDING INFORMATION TO EACH OTHER AND SETTING UP ILLUSIONS. What are you like at parties? Lizzie: I usually manage to keep my pants on. David: You’ll always find me in the kitchen. What’s next on the wish list? Lizzie: We’re putting together a UK tour so wishing for massive crowds, standing ovations and to not come home bankrupt. David: Sunny skies on our wedding day. Lizzie: Oh yeah, that too!

If you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be? Lizzie: “Take a deep breath. Will it really matter in 10 years’ time?” David: The same thing I tell myself today! “Stick to your guns, you can actually do it mate. But for crying out loud stop comparing yourself to other people.” What is your proudest achievement? Lizzie: David saying yes when I asked him to marry me. David: Lizzie liking me enough to ask me to marry her. Which is your favourite café, bar or restaurant in Canterbury? Lizzie: The Bodhi Tree is hands down best food in town. David: I have a soft spot for the darkroom on St Asaph Street because of everything they’ve done to keep variety entertainment alive over the last few years. Also they have great beer. What would you like to see in the ‘new’ Christchurch? Lizzie: Lots of green spaces. More community gardens. There can never be too many! David: An established, council sanctioned busking pitch in the heart of town. Having just returned from New Orleans it’s clear to see that recovery is about people (locals and tourists) enjoying life in the heart of a place. Not just bricks and mortar. What is one thing that Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? Lizzie: I love wild meat (wild venison, wild pork, rabbit…) partly because it’s delicious and partly because dealing with introduced pests by eating them is both environmentally and ethically awesome. BUT I’ve never shot my own food, so that’s my goal by this time next year: slowly morph into the New Zealand version of Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall… David: I am both excited and terrified about Episode VII. Restoration a labour The conservation and restoration of the Isaac Theatre Royal’s gigantic dome is certainly the crowning glory of the recently completed $40 million reconstruction and makeover of the entire building.

A

nd for art conservator Carolina Izzo, who was in charge of the domerestoration team, the most important aspect of the project was its positive connection to the people of Christchurch. Even now, a few weeks after the reopening of the theatre, Carolina and her team are still experiencing a strong reaction from the community as people learn what was achieved. Carolina says it has reconfirmed her belief in the power of heritage conservation to connect people, especially those who have shared a traumatic experience like the Christchurch earthquakes. To her, restoration is more than just a matter of putting material things back together. “It’s an acknowledgement of people’s cultural identity” she says. Awareness of this admirable project is now also spreading overseas. In November, Carolina gave a speech about it at the International Art Conservation Conference in Florence, Italy.

10 December 18, 2014 Metropol

CAROLINA SAYS IT HAS RECONFIRMED HER BELIEF IN THE POWER OF HERITAGE CONSERVATION TO CONNECT PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO HAVE SHARED A TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE LIKE THE CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKES. The number of people working on the 16month dome project varied from nine to 12 and included two conservation colleagues from overseas. The team made sure there were also local people involved, like the contemporary artist Julia Holden, who could not resist being involved in the restoration of this piece of Christchurch’s artistic heritage. Carolina is an internationally renowned, Wellington-based conservator who trained in Florence, with more than 16 years’ experience working on earthquake-damaged objects. Carolina moved to New Zealand in 2001 and worked for six years as a painting conservator at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa before setting up her own conservation business.

Having worked on the Teatro de San Carlo in Naples, which opened in 1767 and is the oldest continuously open opera venue in Europe, she was delighted to be asked to work on Christchurch’s Isaac Theatre Royal by Naylor Love, the principal contractor for its restoration. Carolina was joined by fellow Italian Emanuele Vitulli, with his experience in conserving quake-damaged objects and buildings, who stayed with the team for the first two months. Other enthusiastic co-workers were Stefano Pessina, who did the quantity surveys and Lucia Dori, who helped with the painting conservation.

of love The painting within the dome that needed restoration is made up of eight overlapping canvases featuring dream-like scenes from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, including characters like the mischievous elf Puck; Titania, Queen of the Fairies; and Bottom, whose head has been changed into that of a donkey. The damaged dome was first removed from the theatre’s ceiling in 2012. It was then wrapped in Tyvek high-density polyethylene to protect it from further damage and re-suspended inside the theatre’s Green Room for its restoration. The overlapping painted canvases were then removed from the dome, revealing a lot of damage to the underlying plaster. The team’s challenge was to repair and restore the original shape of the plaster and then cover it with eight pieces of carbon fibre the same shape as the canvasses, which were then to be attached to these. However, mould was also found underneath the polyethylene that had been wrapped around the canvasses for protection. The mould was laboriously removed from the front and back of the canvasses. Eventually, the paintings were also meticulously restored. Other work undertaken by the conservation team at the theatre included restoration of the marble stairway, which has been at the theatre since 1928; and the gilding on the walls, columns and ceiling of the auditorium. We conducted the last part of our interview sitting within the theatre, looking up at the magnificent dome. Carolina then asked to be left alone, so that she could quietly scrutinise every detail of the enormous task she and her team had only recently completed there.

here is always something happening at the centre and improvements being made to its displays, exhibits and interpretation. It really is “the coolest fun in Christchurch.” Right from the moment you walk though the entryway you feel the realistic chill of the environment surrounding you and you know you have left New Zealand behind to delve into the secrets of the world's southernmost continent. Snow falls as you move further into the heart of the centre and the spectacle of the astonishing aurora australis quite takes your breath away. Over the next six months the Time Tunnel from the Ice Fest will be a new feature at the Antarctic Centre where you can learn about Antarctica from 50 million years ago and through to today. Another new exhibit allows you to experience a little of what flying to

Antarctica is like sitting in the tube and webbing seats of a C17 Globemaster aircraft. The Antarctic Gallery covers an impressive range of topics. You can spend a whole day there, or tailor your visit to suit your timetable, with a break perhaps in the well-stocked café, enjoying a light meal and your favourite beverage.

Messing about in boats… There can be little more idyllic a setting for a long and leisurely lunch, than on the deck at the Antigua Boat Sheds overlooking the Avon River as it murmurs and meanders its way towards the Montreal Street Bridge. Eating delicious food, sipping a glass of wine or a cold ale, laughing at the ducks paddling against the current, and watching people “messing about in boats” is about as good as it gets on a summer's day in Christchurch.

IN THE RAFTERS OF THE BOAT SHEDS YOU CAN SEE AN ORIGINAL 130-YEAR OLD ROW BOAT FROM THE FIRST DAYS OF THE BOAT SHEDS.

T

he Antigua Boat Sheds have been part of Christchurch's history for over 130 years and are classified as a Category 1 Historic Building. They were erected in 1882 by two Lyttelton boat builders - Messrs Albert Shaw and J.T. Tidd - for the express purpose of providing recreational facilities for the citizens of Christchurch. The facilities charmingly included a ladies' waiting room and a gentlemen's dressing room! Fast forward 130 years and the sheds survived the Christchurch earthquakes extraordinarily well thanks to strengthening and re-piling work that had been carried out in 2006. Consequently the sheds were closed for only six weeks and were one of the first businesses to be up and running again in the CBD. The Boat Sheds are still home to that traditional and iconic pastime – boating – that retains all the trappings of Edwardian England. They are also home to an excellent cafe and catering service. Indeed the Boat Sheds offer a complete experi ence for visitors. Mike and Sally Jones, and until just a few years ago Sally's family, have owned and operated the Boat Sheds for decades. Back in the 1980s today's fully-functioning cafe was known as the Antigua Milk Bar. But as we know times have changed and tastes have become more

sophisticated. So Mike and Sally extended and developed the cafe into the relaxed and inviting venue it now is where guests can enjoy a delicious breakfast, brunch or lunch. Why not try breakfast cla ssics such as French toast, eggs Benedict or pancake stacks or perhaps some of the cafe's lighter breakfast fare? The lunch menu offers a tasty cafe-style take on a great range of Kiwi favourites such as toasted sandwiches, fish and chips and ground

beef nachos, in addition to more up-market dishes such as risotto, salt and pepper squid and souvlaki. There is a wide selection of slices and cakes in the cabinet too, for that sweet morsel to complete a meal. All the food is prepared daily onsite by the team of four experienced chefs and a baker. There is also a children's menu and a gluten-free menu. The breakfast menu is available all day from 7am and the lunch menu up until 3pm in the afternoon, though the cafe itself is open till 5.30pm in the summer.

The Boat Sheds continue their original 1882 function, offering a range of boats for hire for small and large groups, couples and families. In the rafters of the Boat Sheds you can see an original 130-year old row boat from the rst days of the Boat Sheds. So enjoy an Avon River adventure in a single or double kayak, a Canadian canoe or a row boat or paddle boat, perhaps pulling up at the river bank for a picnic. There are also bikes for hire so you can embark on an urban adventure discovering the city itself or exploring nearby Hagley Park, taking along a boxed lunch from the cafe. If rowing or paddling seems too much like hard work and you would much rather lie back in a punt dangling your hands in the cool Avon, then Punting on the Avon operates its business from the Boat Sheds. The Antigua Boat Sheds are denitely one of Christchurch's top visitor attractions run with a strong sense of integrity and tradition. See for yourself at 2 Cambridge Terrace. Phone (03) 366 6768.

fter three years of hands-on training, the third year CPIT Fashion Technology and Design students were out to impress the fashion industry with their PITCH collections. And impress they did. The industry judges this year were Denise Le'Strange-Corbet from World and Megan McKee from Contemporary Lounge Ballantynes and their choice on the night was Natalie Weaver's collection Tough. Denise Le'Strange-Corbet was taken with the “exquisite tailoring, flawless construction and beautiful fabrics” in Natalie's collection. Tough was inspired by Natalie's mother and featured a neutral palette and echoes of pyjamas and dressing gowns, taken to sophisticated new levels with the soft fabrics folded, layered and draped in unexpected ways. Ethel Chang was highly commended with a very bold and highly technical collection of oversized dresses and suits that were reminiscent of clowns and dress ups, an effect accentuated by the models' white lips and eye shadow. As their training is largely practical, the students must conceptualise, design and construct their ensembles from start to finish and then organise models and choreograph the runaway show. Some go as far as creating their own prints as well.

We want them to hit the ground running with confidence in any workroom in New Zealand, or overseas, and the calibre of our graduates does suggest we are achieving that,” she said. Former graduates of the programme have launched their own labels, such as Georgia Currie with her successful Georgia Alice label.

The newly released Black Opium by Yves Saint Laurent, is a fresh take on their Opium of the 1980s. It is a very different experience from its oriental scented predecessor - with first notes of coffee, pink pepper, pear, followed by orange flower, jasmine, floral, and final notes of cappuccino, vanilla and cedarwood, it is Dodd's pick for the scent of the season. “It's the first coffee floral fragrance,” says Hannah from Dodds Pharmacy. “It's going to be huge for summer.” YSL describe their new fragrance as a vibrant sensual and addictive contrast of light and dark, creating a fragrance very different from any other through many years of collaborative work. Black Opium Eau de Parfum is available in 30ml, 50ml and 90ml, and also in gift sets with mini mascara and eyeliner with the 30ml, or a mini purse size fragrance with the 50ml. Recreated in the spirit of A passion for the history of Christchurch was the incentive to bring new life to an old industrial site. “It was a really intact 100 year old building,” says Alasdair Cassels, founder of The Tannery. “The building really did tell the history of Christchurch.”

A

lasdair has learnt much more about the history of the area since he purchased the old tannery site 20 years ago. Built in 1841 it was one of the primary industry sites set up along the Heathcote River – a river which allowed access to the newly formed city of Christchurch. The importance of the long neglected Heathcote River plays an integral part of The Tannery's future plans. “It needs its mana back,” says Alasdair, who has been talking with local runanga to bring new life back to the river. Work to clean the river has been underway since 2011, when The Tannery began their six monthly rubbish removals. It has become something of a community event, with staff and locals rem oving huge amounts of rubbish including heaters, car bodies, TVs and couches from the river, with support from Christchurch City Council. $400,000 has been earmarked for upgrading the river over the coming years, including building a bridge, a wharf and an art trail along the Towpath walk way. Funding for the project will be coming

than just a crossing point for the river. With a Victorian look on one side and Maori carvings on the other, he sees it as a metaphorical bridge, which is both a work of art and a connection for the city and the people. An unused building at the rear of The Tannery site is to be used as a carving and welding workshop, with the intention that it will continue

as a home for traditional carving. The Tannery itself is also evolving, with two picture theatres to become part of the emporium next year. There are now 70 businesses on site, in The Atrium with its soaring Victorian ceiling, and along The Boardwalk. These consist of 56 retail stores providing everything from homeware and fabrics to owers and good books, as well as17 fashion stores. Most of the stores are owner operated, meaning that those who have chosen to be part of The Tannery bring with them a passi on for their own products as well as the site itself. “We've created a unique boutique environment,” says Alasdair, with many of the tenants those who were misplaced

from the High Street area of the city, as well as new businesses. These include fashion store Alchemy Equipment, a new arrival in July this year, with co-founder Campbell Junor saying The Tannery provided the ideal home for their business with its need for a multi-use site. Like DEVal, who manufacture their garments on site at The Tannery, they provide a connectivity between the customer and the product, with both fashion lines designed on site. Campbell sees The Tannery as containing a carefully curated collection of stores, with the story of what Alasdair has created felt as soon as people walk into The Atrium. “Customers come here specically for our ethos,” says Alasdair.

Overcoming life's challenges - QUICKLY What makes an engineer change professional direction to become a therapist and personal development coach? In Sahera Laing's case it was initially intellectual curiosity about how techniques such as hypnosis, energetics and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) actually work.

T

hen she found herself so fascinated with the idea of using these skills to help people re-evaluate their lives or to overcome issues, that it became her calling. “I take quite a different approach to therapy.” Sahera says, “I help my clients fix their situations fast and accurately - it’s the engineer in me. Giving my clients an awareness and the skills to use in their lives, which means they can continue to make positive life-lasting change” “Many times I have run into clients, years later. and still they are reaping the benefits of the work we did together - improvements to their health, relationships, careers and lifestyle.” Her work incorporates elements of counselling, life coaching, hypnosis, quantum psychology and NLP to enable clients to move from where they are to where they want to be, taking the shortest possible route.

They like her no-nonsense approach and that she tells it “like it is”. Yet being a mother herself, her feminine side allows her to relate and work well with women. She helps clients strategise an effective way of moving forward as quickly as possible and with unwavering confidence. “Life is too short to live in the past.” It's that toolbox of hers that enable Sahera to deal with such a wide range of challenges and she keeps adding more tools and skills all the time. Oliver has a long background in the oil industry in Europe, Australia and NZ; his two very active boys are now aged 13 and 11. Exercise crucial for children A visiting health professor and a world leader on research into school children's physical fitness gave a public lecture about making children healthier at the University of Canterbury.

A

bout 11 percent of New Zealand children up to the age of 14 are considered obese. Another 20 percent are overweight and at risk of obesity. Professor Mike Metzler says the data on United States children is about the same and, in both countries, the rates go way up for kids at the lower socio-economic end. “Only about 20 percent of US high school students are active for more than 60 minutes each day. The latest New Zealand data will be released soon. In 2007 only about 11 percent met that standard. “There is much concern that this will be the first generation to have a shorter average life span than their parents. Much

of that is due to diseases attributable to sedentary lifestyles and poor eating habits. Professor Metzler's lecture focussed on what schools can do to increase children's physical activity as advocated by the US Institute of Medicine in their 2013 report. The US Institute of Medicine report says scheduled time in physical education alone cannot achieve the daily physical activity goal. It is imperative that all teachers, administrators and certain community agencies must be involved in working towards this goal. Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression. Emerging literature suggests that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic, Professor Metzler says.

The salon has a team of stylists with the maturity and expertise to look after senior clients - Georgie, Vicki and Janine have all been hairdressing for over 20 years, and Roslyn and Hayley also have the skills needed to make any hair look great. Such cuts should be well maintained and they recommend an appointment every four to six weeks. V For Hair and Beauty Merivale have many techniques to add colour and minimise regrowth, including foils with highlights and low lights which can really accentuate a good cut. Seasonal flowers

for summer weddings

No wedding feels complete without flowers. Whether formal or contemporary, large arrangements or small touches, they bring something very special to a wedding day.

DAVID AUSTIN ROSES PROVIDE A VERY OLD FASHIONED LOOK, WITH THE OUTDOOR BLOOM CULTIVATED UNDER GLASS, IN SOFT ANTIQUE SHADES. MANY OPT FOR CLASSIC SHADES OF SOFT PINK, PEACH AND WHITE.

F

or the summer season there is a huge array of choice, with local flowers at their very best over the warmer months. “Seasonal flowers are best, says Ian Harvey from Flower Bazaar in Mairehau, providing great value and the freshest blooms. With the wedding season stretching from September to May, there are floral highlights for each month, such as the soft scent of lily of the valley and bright peonies. The statement floral arrangements are of course the bouquets for th e bride and the bridal party, with many opting for traditional buttonholes to match for men, and a touch of colour for mother of the bride.

Classic roses are always popular, says Ian, with a wide variety of rose colours available these days. David Austin roses provide a very old fashioned look, with the outdoor bloom cultivated under glass, in soft antique shades. Many opt for classic shades of soft pink, peach and white. For those looking for a little more colour there are roses and peonies in bright shades of coral, or shocking pink gerberas, as well as baby roses and sweet peas. Lilies are in plentiful supply over the summer, as are the fuller roses of the Avalanche series, with these and peonies perfect for larger table arrangements.

Christchurch’s Café of the Year A Burnside café has been judged the Christchurch regional winner of the Café of the Year Award for 2014. Terra Viva Café & Deli in Roydvale Ave owned by Juliet and Peter Worsp has taken the title ahead of other finalists Phillipstown’s Purple Weka Café & Bar and Savoire Café & Wine Bar in Merivale.

H

owever, for the second year in a row a South Island café has been judged the nation’s best. Dunedin’s Ironic Café has taken out the supreme Café of the Year title for 2014 from 18 finalists from throughout New Zealand. Last year Tasman’s Jester Café was the winner. Ironic Café was built from scratch and is owned by Sue Moller and Steve Wilson who opened it in 2007. For their win, in addition to the kudos of running the country’s best café, Sue and Steve drive home a sporty Renault Clio R.S. 200 worth more than $30,000. Their winning dish was a Spring Stack comprising sautéed fresh local asparagus, chorizo and fresh spinach served with roasted tomato, poached free-range eggs and vibrant avocado crème on Ironic’s freshly baked ciabatta.

Terra Viva Cafe’s winning dish: Hot smoked salmon & bacon jam, textured salad, tomato compote, nuts, spinach, beetroot crisps

Local winner Terra Viva Café & Bar’s winning dish was hot smoked salmon and bacon jam textured salad served with tomato compote, toasted nuts, spinach, beetroot crisps curried crème fraiche & marinated couscous. Regional winning cafés each receive $1,500 worth of Goodman Fielder and $1,500 worth of Wattie’s products. Head judge Kerry Tyack said, “A pleasant surprise awaits you as you enter this popular Christchurch eatery through a darkish door into a light and airy space beyond. Coffee is excellent and overall experience very positive.” Marisa Bidois, CEO of The Restaurant Association of New Zealand says with record entries this year the competition has been tough. “The café culture is such an important part of our ethos here in New Zealand and it’s wonderful to see such a diverse representation in the finalists. A big congratulations to our deserving winners.”

How to make a Pisco Sour The national cocktail of Chile and Peru, this drink may have evolved from the Pisco Punch, which was all the rage in San Francisco during the 1849 gold rush. Pisco is a clear brandy distilled from grapes in the wine-producing regions of Peru and Chile. If you can’t lay your hands on a bottle, cognac is a good substitute, but it will change the colour.

Glassware Usually served in a martini glass, several types are available. Personally we prefer using Luigi Bormioli Bach Martini glasses available from Total Food Equipment, which are an elegant fluted glass.

Recipe 60ml pisco or cognac 40ml fresh lime juice 40ml Simple Syrup 1 large egg white Ice 4 drops of Angostura bitters

Pisco Sour

Put all of the ingredients except the ice and bitters in a cocktail shaker; shake for 10 seconds. Add ice; shake for 10 more seconds, then strain into a chilled coupe. Dot the drink with the bitters and draw a straw through the drops. Bloody Mary's is now online so check out www.bloodymarys.co.nz where they will be publishing all the Mary's Mixologist recipes on their site for easy reference.

Edgy nightclub & gastro pub 'Raising the roof' is a popular expression used to signify a party that's off the charts. And, although the city's new Cook Brothers' bar can't raise the roof, it's not for lack of the 'cool factor'.

C

hristchurch's first rooftop bar has hit the nightlife in a very big way since the long-awaited Engineers and Merchants opened on St Asaph St next to Baretta in November. But what puts the hot in this hot spot is its 'best of both worlds' atmosphere. Owned by Cook Brothers Bars from Dunedin, Merchants – an edgy nightclub with dancing and music – is downstairs, while Engineers – a gastro pub style restaurant and rooftop bar – is upstairs. And, while upstairs is all about good food and atmosphere, downstairs caters to the late-night dancing crowd, open 11.30am until late at 178 St Asaph St. Cook Brothers' Bars cut its teeth on the iconic Dunedin student pub the Captain Cook Tavern before expanding into other hospitality ventures in Dunedin, Auckland and Queenstown. The company's Christchurch venture was named after the building itself, originally occupied from the 1920s by the company Engineers and Merchants. “We have always had Christchurch on the radar and the premises, leased prior to the earthquake by the Fu Hua Chinese restaurant, appealed to us because of the opportunity to create a roof top bar and fill a gap in the bar and the night life scene in the downtown area,” Cook Brothers' Bars CEO James Arnott explains. “It is a great building with a fantastic feel to it and its original use has inspired the name Engineers while the smaller downstairs bar will retain the Merchants name.” Engineers incorporates a range of dining zones both inside and on the roof top featuring a varied menu and bar snacks. “We are planning live entertainment on the roof top bar and inside late at night DJ's will set up and the space will transform into a dance floor,” James says. “Our focus is on providing a fun venue which is in line with our other outlets throughout the country.” When it comes to nightlife, Cook Brothers' Bars has been around the block, after launching in 2004, when Arnott and partner Richard

McLeod bought the Captain Cook tavern as 21-year-old students. The pair later opened the Alibi bar in Dunedin's Octagon along with the Velvet Burger gourmet burger chain. “We have a successful formula and we are looking forward to our venture into Christchurch,” James says. “It is exciting to be offering the first roof top premises and we expect Engineers will create a lot of interest amongst Cantabrians keen to enjoy themselves day or night.”

DISCOVER THE WORLD’S FINEST TEAS The perfect gift for the discerning tea connoisseur can be found at Christchurch tea emporium, Teasme.

I

t is owned and operated by Taiwanese born tea aficionado Shih Yen Chen who has been importing and sharing his personally selected range of teas from around the world, which includes a range produced by his own family in Taiwan, alongside others from China, Egypt, India, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and Japan. Tea workshops hosted by Teasme manager, Eng Eu Poh, aim to demystify the vast selection of over a hundred varieties, guiding the uninitiated, and enabling lovers of fine teas to expand their horizons. Embark on a fascinating journey through the wonderful world of tea to deepen your understanding and appreciation of tea and reap the rewards from the associated benefits for greater physical and psychological wellbeing.

The most common variety is black tea, which accounts for around 75 percent of the world’s tea consumption. Typically rolled and fermented, then dried and crushed, most black tea can be served without milk, in order to experience its full flavour and isn’t at all bitter if brewed correctly. Black tea helps lower cholesterol levels, and has the most caffeine of all tea varieties. Green and white teas have the most antioxidants, which offer a range of health benefits including improved brain function, fat loss, and lowering the risk of cancer. Because herbal and fruit teas are not technically part of the tea family, they contain no caffeine while offering a long list of health benefits. Combinations of dried fruits, flowers, and herbs, some which can be served hot or cold, have pungent aromas and equally rich flavours. Eng Eu’s three-hour master class flies by thanks to his gregarious and engaging personality and concludes with a traditional Taiwanese

Scottish Shortbread Sundae with blueberry ice cream Serves 4-6 Ingredients Blueberry Ice Cream 3C Blueberries (fresh or frozen and thawed) 1C white sugar 1/2C water (you might need more, but start with this) 2 tsp lemon juice 2C half ‘n’ half, or half amount of cream and half of milk 3 Tbsp vanilla paste Scottish Shortbread 1C unsalted butter 3/4C powdered / icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla paste 2½ C plain flour Hefty pinch of sea salt Crème Chantilly ½ C whipping cream 1 Tbsp maple syrup 1 Tbsp wildflower honey ½ a vanilla pod Crème Fraîche Sauce 1 C crème fraîche 1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped out; save pod for another use 3 Tbsp white sugar To Serve 4-6 cherries 1 Tbsp chiffonade or lemon verbena leaves or edible flower petals

Method Blueberry ice cream Put the blueberries, sugar and water in saucepan. Simmer for about 5 minutes while keeping an eye on the water. Don’t let it get too dry and burn, but don’t leave too much water either. Add lemon juice and puree in a blender until smooth. Chill in the fridge overnight. Stir in half ‘n’ half and vanilla paste. Freeze in an icecream maker until it looks like soft-serve, then scoop out and put in the freezer until set and frozen. Scottish shortbread Preheat oven to 190C Cream butter, sugar and vanilla paste. Beat until smooth. Sift dry ingredients together, then GENTLY fold into the butter until the mixture is homogeneous. Press dough evenly into a 20x30cm square pan. Mark into smaller squares by pushing the tines of a fork about ¾ of the way through the dough. Bake in preheated oven 23-28 minutes. Cut along markings while still hot but let it cool in the pan. Turn out and store in an airtight container. Crème Chantilly Heat the cream with syrup, honey and vanilla seeds until hot. DO NOT BOIL. Chill in the fridge 3 hours or up to overnight. Whip to soft peaks when you are ready to serve. Crème fraîche sauce Combine all ingredients in a bowl, whisk together until smooth. Let sit for at least an hour, chilled, before serving. Give a quick whisk right before serving. To serve Pool the crème fraîche sauce on the plate and place one square of shortbread on top. Scoop a small sphere of blueberry ice cream and place on the shortbread. Spoon a dollop of crème Chantilly and put the cherry on top. Lightly scatter the lemon verbena or flower petals.

Talk of the town

Everybody is talking about the new Coriander's restaurant and bar at 222 St Asaph Street. Driving down the one way street, the striking two storied white building, with its wide veranda, and – come evening – glowing lights, it's unmissable.

TO SIT ON THE SPACIOUS VERANDA WITH A FEW DRINKS AND A STARTER OR BAR SNACK, ALL SERVED WITH DRAMA ON SIZZLING PLATTERS, IS AN EXOTIC EXPERIENCE.

I

nside it's all about authentic northern Indian Cuisine and hospitality from 11am till late, with dining, elegant bar, private dining options, and evening entertainment. Famed for its authentic dining and takeaways, this new CBD Coriander's offers patrons even more. Owner Amardeep Singh has launched a new lunch and bar menu. Available from 11.30am to 4.30pm the bar menu is tempting: Deep Fried Chicken, chicken Seek Kebabs, Chicken on Fire, Amritsari Fish and cocktail sized Pakoras are all just $9.90. To sit on the spacious veranda with a few drinks and a

starter or bar snack, all served with drama on sizzling platters, is an exotic experience. The lunch menu includes traditional favourites - Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka Marsala, Lamb Rogan Josh, Lamb Korma, Vegetable Jalfreezy and Dal Makini, plus briyani options and Chole Bhatura, a Punjabi dish of thick leavened Indian fried bread with either chickpeas or chicken. At $14 lunch is very affordable.

Dinner is served from 5pm till late as Indians like to dine later, making it the perfect location for people who prefer late or après theatre dining. The extensive menu is identical to the one that has made Coriander's one of Canterbury's favourite Indian restaurants, with new dishes coming in the New Year. All dishes are prepared by five Indian chefs in the new state-of-the-art kitchen, with two tandoors, viewable through a huge glass window. While during the day and early evening background music is Indian, evening patrons can enjoy an eclectic variety of live late night entertainment and dancing. A salsa dance group was first to perform, and a DJ is available on request. Coriander's also caters for private functions in the atmospheric Bollywood room. Groups can have their own choice of music and can dance from 10pm to 1am. A DJ is available on request. Takeaways can be collected from a discrete entrance at Welles Street, where there is also evening parking for 12 cars. The completed building with restaurant and bar is quite stunning and the Design Team have done a great job.

YES

SAY YES TO iCONSTRUCT THIS MONTH AND YOU WILL RECEIVE $1000 OF ADDITIONAL WORK ON YOUR HOUSE (building or painting work only)

Following the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, we have repaired nearly 500 homes, helping Christchurch residents get on with their lives.

Opting out with iconstruct was the best decision we ever made! From the moment we contacted Ben to get repairs underway it was a stress-free and simple process. We were always well informed along the way and the fact that we were given a timeline before the work started was invaluable, especially when trying to organise our temporary accommodation. Nothing was a bother for Ben and the team, they were always very easy to contact and we even had some additional work done on our house at the same time. The process was far simpler than we could have imagined and the end result was fantastic.

Transforming empty spaces

Pamela Bamforth of the Style File has been somewhat of a saviour for many families and businesses within Canterbury post-earthquakes.

H

er superior home staging and interior styling skills have helped many residential properties, from contemporary homes to original homesteads, ease through the sale process while enhancing and adding value to the home. Right now Pamela is busy preparing for the move to a new, bigger location to accommodate the growing range of furniture and accessories for hire. Pamela’s love for interior design has flourished over the years. She always enjoyed up-scaling the homes she lived in, so eight years ago she decided to turn her passion into her job and proudly took over the Style File, developing it into an independent design business with a professional styling service and full furniture hire. “I help by transforming empty spaces, making them look and feel like homes again,” she says. Pam specialises in residential properties for rapid sale or rental. Over-the-phone quotes are given on a room-number basis, and going ahead, she visits the property to get an idea of everything from the size, character and colour scheme to ascertain which pieces of furniture will look and fit best in the space. From there she prepares a contract and full inventory and liaises with real estate agents, architects, builders or homeowners to dress the space and utilise its character and charm. As it is essential no damage is done to either

property or furniture, and that delivery and completion is on time, professional movers are employed and insurance is taken for transportation and delivery. As she shows off the furniture it’s clear Pam loves what she does, and furthermore, doing it with professional distinction. Given it is a relatively rare situation Canterbury homeowners find themselves in, with many having been forced to renovate, rebuild or relocate, Pamela loves being able to help those in need through what could otherwise be a difficult, stressful and drawn-out process. Being a hands-on owner means Pam oversees each project that is undertaken as well as the buying of all stock.

HOME THE IMPRESSIVE COLLECTION OF INTERIOR FURNISHINGS SPANS FROM PIECES FOR CHARACTER HOMES AND ORIGINAL HOMESTEADS TO MODERN PIECES FOR CONTEMPORARY HOMES.

Pieces are sourced from New Zealand’s finest manufacturers, as well as smaller items being imported from Europe and abroad, prerequisites being distinct, high quality items that have signature and versatile appeal. “Styles change and you have to be able to change with them – some people want bright and modern, some want traditional – so I am always adding furniture and pieces to the collection to ensure there is enough for all tastes.” The impressive collection of interior furnishings spans from pieces for character

homes and original homesteads to modern pieces for contemporary homes. Lounge suites, beds and bed heads, tables and seating, lamps, linen, cushions, flowers and more make up the portfolio of items to be hired out and used in the professional styling services. As part of their professional approach, all items are inspected and cleaned according to a quality control programme to ensure they remain in pristine condition. As such, each piece, even vintage ones for heritage homes, boasts an as-new look so as to elevate the presence in and of the homes they accessorise. The move couldn’t come at a better time, and Pam loves that it’s a reason to update her offerings and order even more stock. “The difference that adding a touch of quality, colour and personality can make is tremendous, and does wonders in terms of helping sell or rent out properties.” Quite simply, Pam is dedicated to bringing out the essence of each space and

‘wow’ Cleaning with the

factor

How many of us would say we love cleaning? Very few I would suspect. How many of us would say we find cleaning relaxing? “Even fewer” is likely to be the answer.

Y

et Natalia Duyunova, of Professional Cleaning Services & Resources Ltd, does love cleaning and also finds it relaxing and uplifting. “Even as a child I would grab a mop and just spontaneously start mopping the floor, says Natalia. “I didn’t need my mother to ask me to do this and I also invented cleaning methods that I thought would be more effective.” Natalia is definitely the kind of person we all need to clean our homes, offices, schools and factories. She has years of professional experience in the business, especially in mining towns in Australia with both large commercial premises and very expensive, top quality houses. Now Natalia has brought that background and expertise to Christchurch and surrounding areas. She and her team of fully trained staff at Professional Cleaning Services are passionate about their work. Cleaning is their business and yes, they love every minute of it, no matter the type or size of the job. “You do not get a second chance to make a positive first impression. That’s why we deliver the job to the highest possible standard with rapid response times from the very outset. There’s a good deal of competition in the cleaning market and we want to be the ones who provide the ‘wow’ factor. We have received superb feedback from our clients who are simply amazed at the finish we can achieve in their homes and commercial premises.” Professional Cleaning Services’ expertise covers the full range of commercial, residential and industrial cleaning. They even offer public swimming pool cleaning, workshop cleaning, campsite cleaning, hospital and medical

facilities cleaning, airport cleaning and section clearing. Basically they can clean literally anywhere and anything. They can provide commercial cleaning day and night anywhere in Christchurch and tailor their cleaning plans to fit clients’ specific needs and budgets, whether it is a one-off project or ongoing cleaning. Listening - a key feature in home design Barry Connor's home designs are anything but ordinary. Each is a unique design that's been tailored to the people who will one day be living out their stories there. Well before any actual design begins, Barry spends time listening to his clients' ideas. He also visits the site. “A well designed home has both form and function, meaning it not only looks great, it functions on a very practical level for those living there.

“I

love hearing what clients are visualising for their new home and bringing that vision to life for them. I add in features that build onto that, making the most of the location and enhancing the energy efficiency of the home. The final design comes out of a process of idea sharing, and clients love that.” Having graduated architecture with honours from Kingston University in London, Barry has lived in New Zealand for over ten years. He's also a qualified Home Star assessor, so every new home design carries a Home Star rating

for energy efficiency and sustainability. “I always orientate the design around the natural energy source of the sun, then look at options for insulation, lighting, heating, water efficiency and building materials. A home should be both a pleasure to live in and cost-effective to operate.” From the images of past projects on his office wall it is clear to see Barry is extremely versatile. There are modern townhouses with very contemporary designs, alongside multi-unit dwellings and more classical and heritage styles.

Barry Connor Design is located at Unit 2/473 Brougham Street, Waltham and can be contacted on 021 203 5992 or email barry@barryconnordesign.co.nz. The website is www.barryconnordesign.co.nz where you can see stunning examples of Barry's architectural designs. Barry Connor Design is also on Facebook.

Kitchen of your dreams Adrian Kay and his team at Dream Doors Christchurch, New Zealand Dream Doors' franchisee of the year for 2013, have the expertise to ensure that kitchen design and installation is lasting, functional and aesthetically pleasing. What makes kitchen design so important? The kitchen is the focal point of a home, the place where family and friends gather to prepare food, to socialise and to entertain. It is also very often the first room that house buyers will check out. A badly designed kitchen, a kitchen in poor condition or with a dated colour scheme can let a whole house down and make it harder to sell. People want their kitchens to feel open and spacious and to utilise space effectively with excellent function and flow. What can Dream Doors offer someone looking to remodel their kitchen? We offer literally thousands of door combinations and colour schemes to choose from - from contemporary to traditional, from town to country. All doors and units are custom-made in New Zealand from local materials and using European fixtures and fittings which means people get only the best quality – and all of this comes with a ten-year guarantee. We also supply and fit a full range of bench tops, from laminates to granites, engineered stone, acrylics, stainless steel and solid timber. In addition we can supply top brand appliances at very reasonable prices. What is the process for working with Dream Doors? Once someone contacts Dream Doors on (03) 338 1081, a representative will go out to their home with a mobile showroom and sit down with them to start the process of deciding what will work best for them, whether it is designing a completely new

What we value in Kiwis put sun and warmth top of the list when it comes to housing. An overwhelming nine out of ten New Zealanders rate good sun and insulation as ‘important’ or ‘very important’ when choosing a new home – far outweighing other factors.

T

he results from the annual Homestar / realestate.co.nz survey show a rising preference for high levels of insulation and orientation for sun – outstripping expectations. Paul McKenzie, national marketing manager at realestate.co.nz, said the increased preference was surprising. “We knew from the last couple of years that most Kiwis rate good sun and insulation as important – even so, a leap of 8% is pretty substantial,” he said. “This shows the real-life performanc e of a home, rather than cosmetic features, is increasingly crucial. Home sellers wanting to command a top price would be well advised to look at issues such as insulation before they put their house on the market,” he said. Now run over three years, the annual survey gives a valuable insight into not only what New Zealanders rate as important, but how preferences are changing over time. Last year orientation for sun was rated as important by 86% - this year it’s risen to 91%. A hig h level of

Barbeque alfresco Entertaining outdoors is an iconic Kiwi tradition and summer is the perfect time to transform the backyard into an alfresco eatery to enjoy with family and friends.

B

unnings National Barbeque Buyer, Kristen Beer, provides her top tips on selecting the best barbeques, spit roasters and pizza ovens for entertaining outside this summer‌ If hosting a barbeque, consider how many people will be catered for – will it be a small family meal or feeding a whole football team? A two burner barbeque will easily cater for up to four people while a six burner will allow cooking for much larger groups. Match the barbeque size to the area. Compact porta ble barbeques suit small courtyards or apartments while larger outdoor kitchens are best for big decks and patios. Consider the fuel source of the barbeque. Gas is ideal for beginners as it is easy to turn on and there are no messy ashes to clean up. For an authentic barbeque taste and experience, choose a charcoal fuelled barbeque. To experience the best of both worlds use a charcoal gas grill which uses gas to light the charcoal, providing a traditional smoky flavour without t he hassle of lighting coals. Chops and 'snags' go down well on any barbeque, but if baking, roasting and smoking is on the menu choose a barbecue with special features such as side burners, rotisseries and built in thermometers. Flat top barbeques are ideal if catering for big numbers as they have a larger cooking surface, are easily portable and will fit almost anywhere in the backyard. Round kettle barbeques are perfect for roasting as their round shape circulates heat t o cook meat slowly and evenly in its own juices, giving food a succulent flavour and tenderness.

64 December 18, 2014 Metropol

TO EXPERIENCE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS USE A CHARCOAL GAS GRILL WHICH USES GAS TO LIGHT THE CHARCOAL, PROVIDING A TRADITIONAL SMOKY FLAVOUR WITHOUT THE HASSLE OF LIGHTING COALS.

Hooded barbeques are all-rounders as they can be used as a hotplate, grill or an outdoor oven. The hood traps in heat to give food a fabulous flavour and many hooded barbeques come with extras such as rotisseries, side burners, a built-in thermometer, hood lights and glass windows. Spice up the backyard with a spit roaster to give food a delicious slow roasted flavour. Fuelled by either wood or charcoal, some roasters also include a motor that can turn up to 20 kilograms at a time, perfect for cooking big racks of lamb or beef. Fire up restaurant quality pizza at home with a traditional pizza oven. Pizza ovens are always a crowd pleaser and can also be used for barbequing, roast ing, grilling, smoking and baking.

FINDING A GOOD BUILDER Hiring the right builder is crucial to the whole building experience. People who have been involved in building, repairing or renovating a house typically report that the key factor in making it a happy experience is nding a good builder and subcontractors.

What most commonly soured the experience, for people ConsumerBuild talked to, were: Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

Ÿ

Poor workmanship Contractors not turning up when promised No communication about variations and other issues that arise Complaints being ignored and problems not being xed Phone calls not being returned (in some cases even by the management of the building companies) Delays which became a nightmare

ConsumerBuild provides tips on selecting a builder Ÿ

When the tenders come in, don’t automatically choose the cheapest. Use a number of criteria to decide, such as:

Ÿ

Price - if a tender is way above or below the others you should question it. Some builders tender low on the initial bid just to get the job - but they'll probably be forced to cut corners, or rely on expensive variations along the way to make the job pay

Ÿ

Examples of their work - ask them if you can talk to someone who has used them to build or renovate, and look at examples of their work. Qualications – nd out if they are qualied. Licensing – check the Register of licensed practitioners to see if they are licensed. A licensed practitioner has shown they have the skills, knowledge and experience to meet governmentbacked national standards. Membership of trade organisations – nd out if they are members of New Zealand Certied Builders Association (CBANZ) or Registered Master Builders Federation (RMBF). Guarantees – whether any are offered and what is covered.

Ÿ Ÿ

Ÿ

In contrast, people who’d had positive experiences reported that the builders they hired all had the following qualities: Ÿ Ÿ

Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

Skill Honesty and integrity, i.e. someone who tells the truth, keeps promises and accepts responsibility when it is due Knowledge of the housing industry A personality that meshed with their own Patience Sympathy for their goals and budget

Ÿ

Finally, talk to each one and decide if you think you can work with them on a daily basis. You need to be comfortable with them, believe communication channels will be open, and condent they are capable of turning the designs into a high quality/satisfactory house. 15 Christmas decorating ideas:

1

Display your favourite Christmas collections. If you don't have a collection, now is a great time to start!

2 3 4 5 6

7

Decorate your house plants by hanging small Christmas ornaments on them. Place a collection of Christmas books on your coffee table. Fill a glass bowl with pine cones and Christmas balls and place on a shelf or table. Wrap your staircase banister with indoor Christmas lights, garland, and bows. To add scent throughout your home, tie 5 or 6 cinnamon sticks together in a bundle using Christmas ribbon. Make as many bundles as you wish and place around your home in baskets or bowls.

8 9 10 11

Make simple bows out of Christmas ribbons and attach them to your curtains with pins.

To decorate your table, tie Christmas ribbon to the stems of glasses and/or handles of cutlery. To dress up your chairs, tie Christmas bows around the chair so that the bow is on the back of the chair. Using a small brush or q-tip, paint the edges of pine cones with glittery gold craft paint. After the pine cones dry, place them in a decorative basket. Add Christmas garland to door frames, window frames and mirrors. You can use tape to secure the garland to the surfaces.

12

13 14 15

Tie bows around door knobs using festive and colourful Christmas ribbon. Attach garland and Christmas bows to your chandelier. You can also weave strings of red beads in the garland that will dangle down from your chandelier and reflect the light, which will add sparkle. Buy poinsettia plants for your home – they’re traditional Christmas flowering plants that will last throughout the season. Don't forget to decorate your fireplace mantel and bring out your Christmas stockings. A few fireplace mantel decorating ideas are adding garland, different styles and sizes of Santas, and festive scented candles.
